Dr. Sanya. A.S

Assistant Professor

Dr. Sanya. A. S is an Assistant Professor (on Contract) at the School of Gender Studies, Mahatma
Gandhi University, Kerala. She completed an Integrated M.Phil-Ph.D. from the Centre for the Study
of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy (CSSEIP), Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Her
thesis titled “Urban Spaces and Young People: An Intersectional Analysis of Kerala” explores
young people’s socio-spatial perceptions and experiences in the urban neighbourhoods of Kerala.
She deals with four courses at the School of Gender Studies: Key Concepts and Debates in Social
Sciences; Gender and Local Governance; Introduction to Research Methods; and Interdisciplinarity
and Academic Writing.
Previously, she worked as a Guest Lecturer at the Centre for Women’s Studies at Pondicherry
University and was a Project Consultant at Sakhi Women’s Resource Centre, Trivandrum (Kerala)
in a project titled “Deepening Democracy”. Her research interests include Gender Studies, Social
Exclusion and Inclusive Policy Studies, Childhood Studies and Urban Studies. Her academic
awards include the ICSSR Doctoral Fellowship (Centrally Sponsored), UGC Junior Research
Fellowship (JRF) and Government of Kerala Scholarship (GOKS).
Her recent publications include an edited book chapter titled “Between Rights and Denials:
Reflections on Child Well-Being & Poverty Concerns” in the book titled “Perspectives on Social
Exclusion: Essays in Honour of Professor Sabyasachi Bhattacharya” (2019) edited by Dr.Yagati
Chinna Rao, Meena Publications, Delhi and “Lives and Leaderships of the Unseeable: Views on the
Dalit Movements in Kerala” in the Conference Proceedings of the 45th Indian Social Science
Congress organized by Indian Social Science Academy (ISSA) held in (2022) at B.S. Abdur
Rahman Crescent Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai (Forthcoming book).
